Issue Advocacy
Part of KKP-SIP’s task of being the social involvement arm of the University is to try to raise the level of awareness and involvement of members of the XU community, particularly the students, on pressing social issues. This, and recognizing the fact that an uniformed and uneducated community cannot effectively respond to its own pressing concerns if it is not fully aware about such matters, the KKP has Advocacy as one of its programs.
The Advocacy Program facilitates issue awareness-raising activities such as educational sessions, issue discussions, compiling and releasing of information materials such as social situationers and position papers, to members of the XU community, as well as to the general public of Cagayan de Oro City. It also engages or takes the lead in mobilization of people for the same purpose of issue advocacy. The community has to be aware of the events happening within and around it for it to have an efficient, effective – and more importantly, informed – response.
There are two main types of the Advocacy Program’s activities. One is the regular information collection and dissemination and training. This pertains to the effort of collecting data on social concerns, for future use. The KKP has its small library for this purpose. The other is the education campaign and mobilization on arising issues.
