The early years of the post-EDSA era were a transition period for the different sectors of society. Spurred by the gains at EDSA, the stakeholders of society were busy trying to take advantage of their new democratic space. This is the backdrop of the reinstitution of the Social Involvement Office of Xavier University. It was in October 1986 when the office was revived, following several years of silence when it was closed down at the height of Martial Law. Upon the encouragement of the Jesuit Social Apostolate, them of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan. Its existence in the university is in line with the goal of Jesuit Education which is to produce a well-rounded person who is competent, open to growth, and committed to generously serve the people of God. As an institution, it is committed to assist the university in the social formation of the

students, faculty and staff to help them grow into socially responsible persons who will live with the Catholic, Filipino, and Christian values, and who will commit themselves to do something to improve the human communities.

The name itself suggests the spirit of Jesuit Education – to develop in the students awareness and concern for the social realities that they may be able to commit themselves to work for changes that will help build more just and humane structures, with Christ as model. As a Jesuit institution whose pillars include social concern, XU saw the need to involve itself in facing a country positioning in a new season.

Initially, it focused on Issue Advocacy and the formation of Student Volunteers. It then expanded the scope of student social formation through curriculum integration. In collaboration with an increasing number of academic and non-academic units in the university, it provided students more venues for social exposure and community service. From there,
KKP opened itself to providing community development assistance.
